: a flame produced by a device in which pressure variations due to sound waves are communicated to the gas feeding the flame and cause it to fluctuate in height so that when viewed in a revolving mirror the image of the flame appears as a luminous band with deep serrations corresponding roughly to the sound vibrations

manometric flame,
a gas flame which fluctuates in response to the movements of a diaphragm placed in an opening in the wall of an organ pipe or other resonator. The varying amounts of fluctuation are used to measure the sound vibrations in the pipe.
